On July 25, 1536 Sebastian de Belalcazar founded the city of Santiago de Cali, first established north of the river, near Vijes and Riofrio. Under orders from the captain Miguel Muñoz Belalcázar relocated the city, where the chaplain Brother Santos de Anasco celebrated mass in the place occupied by the Church of Merced.
During colonial times, the city Santiago de Cali was part of the Governorate of Popayán, which in turn was part of the Royal Audience of Quito and legally subject to the provisions of the Presidency of Quito. Although initially Cali was the capital of the Interior, in 1540 Belalcázar assigns this function to Popayán due to the mild climate of the city.
Until the eighteenth century much of this territory was occupied by haciendas Cali and the city was only a small town near the Cali River. The estates were owned by the Spanish class, who had many slaves and their land devoted to livestock and planting of sugarcane. To develop many of these estates would give rise to neighborhoods, as Cañaveralejo Pasoancho, Arroyohondo, Cañasgordas, Limonar and Melendez.Since that time it has had a very good technology development and progressive change in all its senses.
Throughout history and evolution Cali, there have been places that characterize our city, who are responsible for creating the authenticity and primordial church sites like the Hermitage, the hill of three crosses, Christ the King, the theater Jorce Isaac, and among other places and directions that have always existed in our city remains primary.
It should be noted how special it was the music in our city, mainly the sauce that is part of our history and culture, the sauce is the favorite music of our people and one of the things that stand out more than food and rivers we have.
